Let’s go to the lake!

With only a little over a week to go before this whole shebang gets real, I thought we’d take a moment to figure out the logistics like directions, money and communications. An important read for all attending!

Let’s have a quick chat about getting lost.
After all this planning, it would be a shame for you NOT to find your way to the most beautiful place on earth. Specific driving directions, from Vancouver, Kamloops and Calgary, to Quaaout Lodge can be found on these lovely pre-made Google maps here.
The fastest route from Vancouver is via Hwy #5, the Coquihalla (say: “Kook-Ah-Ha-Lah”) click here for more info about this highway.

Summer in BC often brings a lot of highway construction and repairs, so be prepared for some delays along the Trans-Canada (Hwy #1).

Let’s also have a little pow-wow about credit cards.
You would be wise to advise your bank/credit card issuer that you intend to be overseas – this way they won’t ‘flag’ the suspicious foreign transactions and cut off your bannock money. Call them today.

And another little catch-up about ATM‘s.
There are none at the lake. Well there might be one, but if you’re looking for a specific bank your best bet for cash is an ATM in Vancouver, Kamloops or Salmon Arm. Aussies with accounts through Westpac will be pleased to know that Scotiabank in Canada is an affiliate and won’t charge withdrawal fees on the receiving end. Almost everywhere accepts credit cards (and don’t charge you a fee!).

And one last word about mobile phones (‘cell phones’ in Canadian).
For those of you with an unlocked phone that you wish to use in Canada, there are several providers for pre-paid coverage. We recommend Rogers, Telus or Fido. You’ll need to go into a retail shop to get set up.
If you are spending the majority of your time out near us by the lake, ask to have a Salmon Arm area number starting with ‘250’. Cell phone plans are little tricky in Canada as both the caller AND the recipient get charged for any call (total rip-off).

Plan ahead and make this trip a safe and enjoyable one!

P.S. We’ll soon be sending out a list of local places to eat around Quaaout Lodge.
